ShulAid – March 2013

On Sunday 10th March we staged a Music Hall Style Evening with dinner .

Around 110 people attended and thanks to my Shulaid team of Vicky and Jeffrey Cohen, Lewis and Megan Cosky, Marcia and Adrian Levey, Katarina Webb and my husband Howard, plus Hillary Harth and Judy Lassman they were able to enjoy an evening of fress and fun.

I also want to mention those solo artists who gave their time and talents to provide a great show for our audience. Thanks especially to Brian Bradley, the Leonard Sachs of Wootton Gardens and vocalist extraordinaire, plus Celia Bradley,  Max Dias, Walter Kammerling, Marcus Leiberman, Valerie Millin, David Weitzman and the Wootton Warblers chorus who all aroused amazing audience participation.

The event raised about £1000, which is being used to upgrade the Shul’s security system.

Table Tennis Group Presents new Megillat Esther

The Bournemouth Hebrew Congregation table tennis group has presented the Congregation with a  new Megillat Esther.

The money for the new Megillah was raised by the table tennis group which meets every Monday morning at the Gertrude Preston Hall. The new Megillah was presented to Rabbi Adrian Jesner and assistant minister Barry Sklan by Vicky Cohen just before the Megillah reading on 23 February. The Rabbi then put the new Megillah to good use by using it for the first Megillah reading of this Purim.

Happy Purim to all members of our congregation and to our visitors.

Emunah Charity Walk – 9 September 2012

It was 10 years ago that Emunah started planning the first sponsored walk. Commencing in 2004 on the West Highland Way in Scotland, followed by the Wicklow Way in Ireland in 2006, Snowdonia in Wales in 2008 and the Lake District in 2009. A walking group met regularly on Hampstead Heath under the guidance of Terry and Elaine, with a 2 day Dorset Dash thrown in for good measure.

This one day memorial walk provided the opportunity to catch up with some friends made along the way, and also to welcome new walkers. Marilyn Dexter and Anne Ozdamar represented Bournemouth, with Anne’s daughter Liza and her husband Gavin Sinai joining in. We were blessed with lovely weather as we climbed up Coombe Hill to take in spectacular views of the Chiltern Hills, before tackling a circular route including the grounds of Chequers, complete with CCTV cameras and a police escort for part of the route!

The purpose of this walk was to raise money for a new Art Therapy Centre at the Sarah Herzog Children’s Centre in Afula, which is home to over 200 children suffering from various degrees of neglect, abuse and dysfunction. The love and care they receive enables them to overcome the traumas they have faced and integrate back into the community. As we ate our lunch we remembered Anna Finchas z”l, a talented artist and Emunah member who had participated in all the previous sponsored walks, and to whom the new project is being dedicated.

We are pleased to say that we all successfully completed the 11.5 miles without incident – with a few photos, aching muscles and your kind sponsorship donations to show for our efforts. We would like to thank each and every one of you who has made a donation – we could not succeed without you. Our total is over £600 and rising.  If you have not yet done so, it is still not too late to donate!

Thank you all on behalf of Emunah and ourselves.

Yom Ha’Atzmaut – 25 April 2012

Every year the anniversary of the creation of the State of Israel is enthusiastically celebrated by the members of the BHC and the local community, this year was no exception. The Menorah Suite was packed with more than 150 people from Bournemouth’s Jewish community, as they came together to celebrate the occasion and enjoy the wonderful Israeli food catered by the local kosher restaurant Falafel.

The evening started with some interesting audio-visual presentations prepared by Stephen White. After the meal the ladies of the Israeli Dancing class performed, which was followed by Lawrence Cohen entertaining everyone with his singing of traditional Hebrew songs, ending with the singing of the Hatikvah.

The raffle prize was a large bowl made and donated by the local potter Rosemary James. The prize was won by Marilyn Dexter.

It was a very enjoyable evening which raised £815 for the Israeli Paralympic team. Our thanks go to Audrey and Alan Kneller, Ruth and Louis Markham and Jonathan Kay for organising this event. The whole Bournemouth Jewish Community look forward to celebrating many more anniversaries of Israel’s Day of Independence.

Hannah Levy House Golf Day – 18 June 2012

In November of last year Geoffrey Feld suggested that we should organise a golf day in support of the new Dementia Wing of the Hannah Levy House. A similar event had been organised in 2006 and had raised a considerable amount of money. Geoffrey’s  suggestion was enthusiastically supported by the members of the Wessex Jewish Golf Society and a small committee was setup comprising of Susan and Geoffrey Feld, Alan Argeband, Jeffrey Cohen and Mahir Ozdamar.

The plan was to organise a big golfing event at the Canford Magna Golf Club near Bournemouth.  After months of planning and hard work, we were more than a little apprehensive about the weather as the day drew closer.

The event was very well supported by individuals and local businesses alike. A number of individuals committed to travelling down from London and several well-known local businesses agreed to support the event by contributing players, sponsoring holes or by placing advertisements in the event brochure.

Finally the golfing event  took place on Monday, 18 June 2012 and we were blessed with the most glorious sunshine. After the weeks of rain we have had, this surely counts as a minor miracle.  52 golfers took part, playing in 17 teams, which represented one of the biggest fields we have ever had in Bournemouth. Rhona and Leon Taylor did an excellent job of registering all the golfers and later on collating the results. The course was in great condition and the greens were true and fast. Everyone had the most enjoyable game of golf and was very appreciative of the cold drinks and snacks provided by Alan Argeband’s granddaughters Bianca and Melody at the 10th tee.

After the completion of the golf games the golfers, their partners and guests relaxed at the club house over a few drinks catching up with old friends and make new acquaintances.

Alan was our MC for the evening and  Wessex Jewish Golf Society Captain Jeffrey Cohen together with Susan presented the prizes to the winning teams and individuals.

Following the prize giving, the raffle was drawn with the winners walking away with whisky and other attractive gifts. After that Alan auctioned two Tottenham Hotspur shirts, donated by Harry Redknapp the now ex-manager of Spurs, signed by the whole team and the manager.

The event was a huge success and raised in excess of £30,000 for the Hannah Levy House Dementia Wing. The HLH Trust and the event organisers would like to thank everyone for taking part and for their most generous support.
